RAH 2017: In Country

The flight from Pittsburgh to Miami was the best flight I have even been on. As we are sitting in the tarmack to push back at 6:00am, I put of my noise canceling headphone and start listening to 'Up and vanished', found a comfortable position to sit, and the next thing you know I was being woken up by the plane touching down in Miami. I slept through take off and the whole flight. Best. Flight. Ever.

After landing in Miami I had a two hour layover before the flight to Haiti, luckily my friends Justin Portis was also on a layover from LA to Port-Au-Prince, so we killed some time and talked about ministry, filming, and he upcoming run.

This being my 7th trip to Haiti I was looking forward to landing and being greeted by Rodger and our driver from the Joshua house. Rodger and I were going to film some B roll footage for Water Mission and get some film of the one main water way in Cap Haitian. In all of the times I have come to Haiti, this was the first time I flew alone, and I must say, it gave me a greater appreciation for the people of Haiti.

Rodger had informed me that he and the driver were operating on Haitian time, so they were going to be running late. By that point I was already through 'customs' and made my way outside to wait for the van. As I'm standing the the street outside of the airport by myself with my bags, I felt overwhelmingly comfortable and safe. This was vastly different from my first trip when I was so struck by the culture and the environment, I had no clue what to expect. But that's what is so nice about returning multiple times to a place, you understand the culture, you know what to expect, and you don't have to worry.

After being picked up in my favorite grey Nissan diesel van (that always has an issue with the sliding door), Rodger and I headed into town to walk around and get some footage before going to the Joshua house to have a Valentine's Day dinner.

I am so glad to be back in Haiti where the friendships are as warm as the air, and the people are as beautiful as the land they inhabit.
